Our pick, if you don’t read another word: the best high chair for small spaces we own is the Primo PopUp. It folds to about 4 inches thick with one button, weighs 10 pounds and comes out of the box ready to use. The Graco is our second pick because it is tiny standing up, even though it does not fold flat, and the Ingenuity Sun Valley is the third, a chair that folds flat and stands on its own.
One note on scope. We cover high chairs as gear. When a baby is ready to sit and eat is a question for the AAP and your pediatrician, and we set out what they say in when can a baby use a high chair. How to fit the harness and use the chair safely is a question for the manual that ships with it and the CPSC, rather than a blog, including this one.
What small space means for a high chair
There are two different small-space problems, and they need different chairs.
The first is a chair that takes up too much floor while it is in use. A full-size chair with a big splayed base dominates a small kitchen. For that, you want a chair that is small standing up.
The second is a chair that has nowhere to go between meals. If it has to live in a cupboard, behind a door or in the gap beside the fridge, what matters is how thin it folds and whether it stands up by itself when folded.
Know which problem you have before you buy. The Primo and the Ingenuity solve the second one. The Graco solves the first one and not the second, and we will be plain about that below.
The three, side by side
| Chair | Our rating | Fold | Weight | Harness | Ages and max weight | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primo PopUp | 5 / 5 | About 4 in thick, one button, 10 seconds | 10 lb | 3-point | 6 to 36 months, 35 lb | Storing it away between meals |
| Graco High Chair | 4.5 / 5 | Folds, but not flat | Not stated | Not stated | Four stages, up to 60 lb | A small footprint while in use |
| Ingenuity Sun Valley | 4 / 5 | Folds flat, stands on its own | 5.5 kg | 5-point | 6 months to 3 years, 33 lb | Folding flat on a budget |
Our ratings are our overall judgment of each chair, not a score added up from this table.
1. Primo PopUp: the one that folds almost flat
The Primo PopUp is built around the fold. One button folds it down to about 4 inches thick in around 10 seconds, and it unfolds just as fast. It weighs 10 pounds, which makes it easy to carry from room to room or take with you. Standing, it measures 28 by 24 inches and 38 inches high, on an alloy steel frame. It arrives fully assembled, so there is nothing to build.
The seat is padded leatherette with a 3-point harness, on stable legs with a wide base. The tray comes off and goes on the top rack of the dishwasher, and the seat cover lifts off to wipe down. It is made for 6 to 36 months, up to 35 pounds, and it is BPA, phthalate and lead free. We have used it with a child up to 25 pounds.
That last point is a guess, so follow the care instructions before you put the cover in a machine. The Primo is the chair we would point anyone towards if the problem is where the high chair lives between meals.
What we like
- Folds to about 4 inches thick with one button, in around 10 seconds
- Arrives fully assembled, ready to use
- Only 10 pounds, easy to move or take with you
- A wide, solid base, and a dishwasher-safe tray
- Wipeable leatherette seat cover
What we don't
- A 3-point harness rather than 5-point
2. Graco High Chair: small standing up
The Graco is the opposite kind of small. It folds, but not flat, and it will not slide into the gap beside a fridge. What it is, is very small standing up, so it takes very little floor space at the table. If your kitchen problem is a chair that dominates the room during meals, this solves it.
It is also easy to clean day to day. The clear top of the tray lifts off, so only the dirty part goes to the sink, and the tray insert is dishwasher safe and BPA-free. The seat is a wipeable design with no crevices, and the fabric and straps come off for washing. It converts through four stages, from high chair to big kid chair, up to 60 pounds.
We have only used the high chair stage, so we will not tell you how the later stages hold up. The full review is our Graco high chair review.
What we like
- Very small standing up, so it takes little floor space at the table
- Easy to clean, with a lift-off clear tray top
- Crevice-free seat, and fabric and straps that come off for washing
- Quick to assemble
What we don't
- Folds, but not flat, so it will not tuck beside the fridge
- We are not sure we will keep it into the toddler years
3. Ingenuity Sun Valley: folds flat and stands on its own
The ity by Ingenuity Sun Valley is a lightweight plastic chair that folds flat for storage and stands up on its own when folded. The tray clips onto the back of the chair for storage, so the whole thing stays together. Standing, it measures about 29 by 22 inches and 39 inches high, and it weighs 5.5 kg.
It comes with a two-section Twist and Dine plate that locks onto the tray so it cannot be thrown on the floor, is food-grade safe and goes in the microwave. The large tray adjusts to three positions as your baby grows. The soft seat pad comes off to clean, and there is a 5-point harness. It is made for 6 months to 3 years or up to 33 pounds, whichever comes first, and it goes together without tools. We have used it with a child up to 25 pounds.
That is why it rates a 4. It folds flat and stands up, which is exactly what a small space needs, but it does not feel as well made as other high chairs we have owned.
What we like
- Folds flat and stands up on its own when folded
- The tray stores on the back of the chair
- A lock-on Twist and Dine plate that goes in the microwave
- Tray adjusts to three positions, and a 5-point harness
- No tools needed to put together
What we don't
- Not as well made as other high chairs we have owned
Which compact high chair fits your home
If the chair has to disappear between meals, buy the Primo. It folds the thinnest, it is ready in seconds, and it weighs 10 pounds.
If the problem is floor space at the table rather than storage, the Graco is the one. It is small standing up and easy to clean, but it will not tuck into a narrow gap.
If you want something that folds flat and stands up on its own for less, the Ingenuity does that, with a 5-point harness and a lock-on plate. Just expect the build to be a step down from the best chairs we have owned.
If you need a chair for a holiday rental, visits to family or a second home, the Primo is the easy answer, because it arrives assembled and folds away to almost nothing.
When a compact chair is not enough
A compact chair is a trade of features for size. If you have the room for one everyday chair, a full-size chair that reclines and adjusts in height carries a baby from the first purée to the toddler at the table more comfortably, and our everyday pick is in the best high chair. Many families end up with a full-size chair at home and a compact one for trips or a small second space.
If you are still choosing between types, our high chair buying guide goes through the features that matter, wooden vs plastic high chairs covers the material, and cleaning any of these is in how to clean a baby high chair.
The bottom line
For a small space, the Primo PopUp is the high chair we would buy first, a 5 out of 5 that folds to about 4 inches thick, arrives assembled and feels solid on its wide base. The Graco is our 4.5 for a small footprint and easy cleaning, as long as you do not need it to fold flat. The Ingenuity Sun Valley is our 4, a chair that folds flat and stands on its own and does the job, without the build quality of the other two.
